Bedding and sand
When setting up a terrarium, the substrate needs to do more than look natural. Choosing bedding and sand according to the species matters: animals from dry habitats need a different base from species that require more humidity, while burrowing animals need a sufficiently deep layer that supports their natural behaviour. Exo Terra offers a range of options for creating suitable habitats for reptiles and other terrarium animals.

Choose the substrate around the species and habitat
A natural-looking base is not necessarily the right one for your pet. Start with the conditions the species needs: a dry or humid habitat, whether it naturally burrows, and how often the substrate will need cleaning or replacing.
- Bedding for humid habitats: coconut fibre, bark and other organic substrates are better suited to setups where moisture retention and a softer surface are important.
- Sand for dry habitats: is more suitable for desert and semi-desert setups. Choose it according to the species and how the animal moves, digs or feeds on the substrate.
- Substrate for burrowing and hiding: some species need enough depth and the right texture to dig, shelter and express natural behaviour, so substrate structure matters as much as appearance.
For regular substrate changes or different terrarium setups, Repti Planet offers a range of sands and substrates for common habitat types. Zoo Med adds further options for different species and enclosure conditions.
